The United Arab Emirates (UAE) is a constitutional federation comprised of seven emirates: Abu Dhabi, Dubai, Sharjah, Ajman, Umm Al-Quwain, Ras Al Khaimah, and Fujairah. Spanning 1,448 km along the west coast of the Persian Gulf and the Gulf of Oman, the UAE’s territory features a dynamic blend of land and water extending into the Arabian Peninsula.
The coastline of the UAE is renowned for its abundant pearls, a resource that has sustained its people for centuries. This coastal region is dotted with islands, coral reefs, and ridges, with nearly 200 islands falling under UAE jurisdiction in the Persian Gulf. Notable islands include Abu Dhabi Island, the capital of the UAE; Das Island, rich in oil; Delma Island, known for its pearls; and other significant islands such as Umm Al Nar, Saadiyat, Hamra, Abu Musa, Greater Tunb, and Lesser Tunb.
The mainland of the UAE features a diverse landscape, ranging from narrow plains edged by sandy deserts in the west and south, to highlands that stretch into the eastern and southeastern regions near the border with Oman.
Recent archaeological discoveries suggest that human settlement in the UAE dates back several thousand years, possibly to the Stone Age (5500 B.C. or 7500 B.C.), when the region experienced a more humid climate with frequent rainfall.
